What is Reading Intervention?
Reading Intervention is a class that gives individual attention to children who struggle with reading and who are scoring at basic or below level on their STAR Tests. Student's current reading challenges will be identified in this class and then remediated through a specifically-tailored program in one-on-one sessions with a professional educator who specializes in the reading instruction.
Our focus moves beyond reading skills and classroom performace into developing a love of reading that will continue with our students for the rest of their lives.
The first step in this program is to assess your child's reading strengths and weaknesses. Once this is done, one of our reading specialists will recommend a course of study that suitable for your child.
The number of hours and per week and program length depends on your child's current level and goals and all programs are customized to be ideal for each indivdual child. Most students require 1-2 hours per week of one-on-one instruction, in addition to take-home activities.
Why do you need a Reading Specialist?
Some signs that your child may benefit from a reading specialist include:
- Have low reading scores on the STAR or CST
- Express frustration or dislike of reading
- Slow, labored homework performance (or avoidance of homework)
- Concern about a child's reading skills from an educator
Most schools do not have the funds or staffing to provide systematic, specialized reading instruction to students who require intervention. As classrooms become more crowded, students receive less individual attention from their teachers and other instructors.
