Ways to Keep Your Child Academically Motivated During Winter Break

by Leilani

Winter break is right around the corner!  Most students will be on vacation for two weeks.  Two weeks of non-educational activity can undo all of the great work and study habits that the students have formed.  Here are some fun ways to keep your child motivated:

  1. School Projects/ Reports – Most teachers take advantage of the break to assign projects or reports.  These assignments can become overwhelming for you and your child if they are left until the last minute.

  • Sit down with your child and make a schedule with deadlines.

  • Decide together on a “reward” that your child will get for completing a certain amount of work each day.  It could be getting to go outside and play, watching a favorite television show, or getting a fancy sticker.  Be creative!

  1. Educational computer/ video games

  • If your child loves to play on the computer or play video games, require them to play educational games for half of their allotted time.

  • There are numerous free educational websites and video games available based on the student’s age.

  1. Watch an educational movie or documentary based on a historical event.

  2. Things are more fun with friends!  Invite a couple classmates over to do educational activities.

  • Have a spelling bee to see who gets to pick the next non-educational activity.

  • Play math BINGO.

  • Work on a fun science experiment.

  • Have them use the internet to research their favorite musician/actor/athlete/celebrity and write a short essay.

  • Again – be creative!
