Researching Tips: Or, Researching Made Easy(-ish)!

1. Skip to the end of the book!

Use the index, bibliography, and works cited pages to help you find other sources. Writers refer to seminal texts pertinent to their field(s) of study, and an easy way to find out what’s important to your area of study is to look at the works and writers the author references.

2. Scan the table of contents.

After you’ve found a book you think will be relevant to your research, glance at the table of contents. It’s a great way to find out if the book you’re about to check out from the library or buy is actually the one you need. The titles of each chapter will give you an idea about the subject matter, and skimming the first few paragraphs of each chapter will also help you determine whether the information relates to your research.

3. Skim the Introduction.

The introduction will present the author’s intervention and main arguments. The writer also provides details about what s/he will be addressing in each chapter. If you find the information germane to your research, take the book home and start reading!

4. Conduct a Boolean search on the internet.

This method will narrow your search results and enable you to find specific information, rather than give you hits on thousands of sources. Refer to this Berkeley page for information on Boolean searches:
