Elementary & Grade School Math Discoveries

"Using math in the real world"

Math Discoveries is a math enrichment class that integrates thematically based lessons to Mathematic Content Standards for California Public schools, while demonstrating the real-world applications of math.  Our classes are divided by grade-level and lessons allow students real hands-on practice using mathematics.  Our goal is to help students develop a sense of how mathematics factors into their everyday lives and how they can use math in practical application.

Skill-Level Assessment

Prior to the start of the class, students take a Skill-Level Assessment to determine the child’s current progress in understanding grade-level mathematics standards.  Once the student’s strengths and challenges have been determined, the instructor can effectively prep.

Program Benefits

Math Discoveries fosters students’ in-depth understanding of math concepts, as well as an acquisition of math skills.  The lessons introduce and highlight the use of various math strategies emphasizing the development of proficiency in basic facts and process for solving various math problems.   Class activities help students develop a capacity for abstract thinking and “real world” projects emphasize computational and procedural skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving skills.

Three-step Process

Our lessons are foundationally based on a three step process of learning: Learning Concepts, Problem Solving Strategies, and Hands-on Applications.

Step One: Learning the Concepts

Students are taught mathematical concepts that relate to the current lesson.  Each concept is reinforced through “Skill Building Worksheets” that provide practice for students.

Step Two:  Problem Solving Strategies

Students are provided with instructional models that introduce problem solving
processes.  By targeting specific strategies, students are equipped with tools to
determine the meaning of the problems and methods of solving it.

Step Three: Hands-on Application

Students apply problem solving strategies, working together or alone to complete
various hands-on projects and activities to bring relevancy to the math concepts.
Students are given additional problems for take-home practice
