Improving your pronunciation skills takes motivation, time, practice and a plan of action that goes beyond a classroom. Through understanding the sound system of English, intensive practice and developing self-awareness, you have the means to improve your accent. This class provides a model, appropriate feedback and an environment of self-discovery to help you begin the process of transferring new pronunciation to everyday speech.
Class Overview:
This class is designed primarily for adult learners, non-native speakers of English, including undergraduates, graduates, college-bound students, professionals, and English as a Second Language Instructors, who want to speak English clearly and effectively in communicative settings. The class level is intermediate to Advanced (TOEFL 475 and above). Students do not need any previous knowledge of phonetics. The goal of the class is to strengthen students' ability to self monitor for specific targets, enabling them to use corrected pronunciation patterns more frequently and utilizing tools for clearing up misunderstandings in conversation while gaining confidence and comfort speaking English.
The goal of each lesson is to help students gain pronunciation awareness through the following:
- Discover your own speech errors
- Identify personal targets
- Learn the significant features, rules and guidelines for pronunciating English
- Learn specific intonation patterns or sounds
- Strengthen ability to self monitor specific targets
